How To Delete a Shared Template
Tips and Tricks for Microsoft® FrontPage®

What You Want to Do

Expected Audience: Intermediate

If you have a shared template that you no longer want used, you need to delete it from your Web. Here we show you how to do this.

Feature to Use

  • Tools | Web Settings
  • Hidden Directories

Specific Steps to Take
To delete an existing shared template, follow these steps:

NOTE: Any user who can open the web can modify existing shared templates.

  1. On the Tools menu, click Web Settings, and then click the Advanced tab.

  2. Click to select the Show Documents in Hidden Directories check box, and then click OK.

  3. When FrontPage prompts you to refresh your web, click Yes.

  4. The _sharedtemplates folder is displayed in the Folder List.

  5. In the Folder List, double-click the _sharedtemplates folder to open it.  Depending on the types of shared templates you have created, the _sharedtemplates folder contains subfolders corresponding to the names of the tabs in the New dialog box.

  6. Double-click to open the subfolder (Pages, Frames, or CSS) that contains the shared template you want to delete.

  7. Right-click the folder corresponding to the name of the shared template you want to delete, and then click Delete.

  8. When FrontPage prompts you to delete the shared template, click Yes.

Note: This procedure only deletes the shared template from the list of available templates for a web.

It does not delete the copies of the shared template created on the local computers of authors who have previously opened that web; the template will still be displayed in the list of templates in the New dialog box when those authors create new pages.

To remove the local shared templates, each author must delete the appropriate shared template folder from the Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\Pages folder on his or her computer. The exact location of this folder depends on each author's operating system and installation directory.
