 Getting Started with Newsgroups

With an Internet connection and Microsoft Outlook Express, you can join any number of newsgroups. Microsoft Outlook Express comes with Microsoft Internet Explorer.

You will need the following information from your Internet service provider (ISP) or local area network (LAN) administrator:

  • For newsgroup reading, you need the name of the news server you want to connect to and, if required, your account name and password.
After you get your news reader (Outlook Express) started, you'll find there are many ways to tailor it to your needs. You can look in Outlook Express Help Contents for more on how to view and join newsgroups.
  • To start Outlook Express from within Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, point to Mail & News, and then click on Read News. Microsoft Outlook Express will open.

Follow these directions to set up and manage newsgroups using Microsoft Outlook Express

To add a news account
  • On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  • In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click the Add button.
  • Select News to open the Internet Connection Wizard, and then follow the instructions to establish a connection with a news server.

*To add the sharepoint newsgroup to your list, you must add msnews.microsoft.com news server to the News (NNTP) server text box when prompted for the "name of the News Server your Internet Service Provider has provided you" .

Note: The first time that you choose this, Outlook Express will download the names for all 35,000+ newsgroups. Dependent on your access speed, it may take approximately 10 minutes for this to finish.

For more help with Newsgroups and Outlook Express:
