Bonus Tutorial: How to Collect Addresses From Your Web Site Visitors-
Step 4 (cont)

Why did I have you configure an editor for your txt file? Well, now that you have done so, you can download and view your data any time you want by simply double clicking the data file name in FP. When I do that, MS Word opens, automatically downloads my data file and shows the data we have so far:

Data in Microsoft Word

The first time FP creates the addresses.txt file, it will insert the form field names I assigned, in the first row and then each new submission will be added below the last. Do not be concerned that the lines are wrapped or that the data entries do not line up. You can remove the quotes by using search and replace, and then access this data file directly using mail merge, or copy the whole contents and paste into Excel, in which case your data will look something like this:

Again, just strip out the quotes, save to your PC and use this file as the data source when you merge to email to send your plain text newsletter or import into your Outlook address book. Importing into Outlook will let you take an alternative approach to sending your newsletter, which was discussed in step 8 of the previous tutorial.

There is certainly lots more that could be said about this topic, but these steps should get you well on your way to achieving your goal of establishing a system to collect your visitors' email addresses and other information and then move it to your PC for use.

I wish you all the best in your efforts to apply these principles and procedures. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you find an error or if you have questions or suggestions: tbergman@tkb.com
